During our stay after Sharmila’s formal presentation several students of NLSI Bangalore agreed to take up a tort case against the British Government in Britain seeking damages for their part in the creation of the AFSPA, the training of Indian Police officers (they claim) in a shoot to kill policy when seconded to the RUC and training of Indian Army Officers at Sandhurst. We were told it had a small chance of success but might generate publicity and force the Indian Government to consider their lack of trials here. But soon after the NSLI newly set up legal cell was contacted by the Karnataka Government and offered supervision by one of their Additional Counsels. It seems the prospect of better jobs and a career on graduation swayed students from their previous high ideals. They no longer talk to us about any possible legal action to repeal the AFSPA.
